These creatures are long nosed goblins. They are the bad guys in book one. They come mythical folklore in Japan. The Ninja were known to have dressed up like these creatures to scare their enemy. 
Some say they were real.

The Kijo
The Kijo are also folklore and have been known to have special powers. Some say this is were the witches of common stories came from. The demoness, witches, ogress, she-devils - ogre's are all assistants to the Tengu and bad guys. In book one
